Acupuncture is the insertion of one or more
needles into small specific locations on the body called acupuncture
points. Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of
healing known to mankind. It is estimated that
acupuncture originated in China and central Asia around
five thousand years ago.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recognizes that there is a
vital force in the human body and all physical things called
"Qi" or "Chi" energy. In the human body it is thought to
control the working energy of every organ and system. This
energy must flow freely and in the correct strength and
quality if the body is to function correctly. In all
forms of illness, this flow of qi or chi is impaired. Acupuncture
when used correctly directly affects this energy at special points located
on the energy pathways called "meridians".
When an
acupuncture needle is gently inserted into these
acupuncture points the needles produce various
beneficial effects. A skilled practitioner will
sometimes apply various techniques referred to as
"manipulation" in order the direct the chi in the
direction it needs to go according to the patient's
condition or disease. Using these techniques the energy
can be drawn to a deficient organ, disperse an excess
energy in an organ, remove a blockage of energy, and so
on, according to the individual needs of the patient. As
the balance and harmony of the energy or chi is restored
the symptoms of the illness disappear. If all of the
functions and organs of the body are working properly
and harmoniously there can not be sickness within the
body or mind.
Practitioners will
sometimes heat a point or points with a special herb
called "moxa" (Artemisia Vulgaris Latiflora),
which resembles a brown colored wool. Usually, a tiny
cone of moxa is placed on the needle that has been
inserted or on the skin over an acupuncture
point. The herb is then ignited and then quickly removed when the heat is felt. Like
the needles, moxa revitalizes, reinforces, invigorates,
and restores balance and harmony to the vital energy.
